Job Description:
To undertake any work of a technical nature that falls within the Jobholder’s ability and competence
To work within a project team to achieve the project objectives
To supervise the work of junior staff
Key Result Areas: Delivery of designs in accordance with the Client’s requirements and appropriate design standards using cost effective methods of analysis and design
Assist in the development of innovative ways of providing design services and supervising the work of other less experienced staff
Purpose: To be the Design Manager of the civils and structures team in Birmingham supporting the contract manager and project managers in delivery of all technical aspects of projects. .

Technical Competencies: Level 3: competent to work unsupervised and to supervise others; competent to check the work of others
Essential Qualifications: BEng, MEng or equivalent CEng MICE or MIStructE or working towards either with additional experience in lieu
Desired Qualifications: PTS or other track safety qualifications
Responsibilities
Undertake the roles of Project Manager, Activity Manager, Designer or Checker including supervising the work of others
Assist with competency appraisal processes subject to suitable level of supervision
Delivery of work to programme, budget and specification planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources and finances
Preparation of engineering solutions, presentation of engineering options
Inspection, surveying and assessment of under line and over line bridges
Preparation and checking of feasibility studies, inspection and assessment reports and other written documents
Preparation and checking of assessment, calculations, design calculations and structural analysis
Production and checking of design concepts, design details, drawings specifications and other technical documents
Management of teams of engineers, technicians and external suppliers
Training and development including the role of delegated engineer for graduate engineers on ICE Training Agreement
Undertake any other reasonable tasks as requested.
The Individual
Essential Experience: Post-graduate relevant experience in the design and assessment of bridges plus a good knowledge of civil engineering practice
Previous experience in the rail industry and knowledge of railways standards is desirable
The Jobholder should be computer literate and conversant with MS Office suite and with structural analysis software (the company uses SuperSTRESS, ASAS and Archie)
The Jobholder should also be familiar with production of drawings using AutoCAD
Candidates will be required to bring evidence of their qualifications and permission to work in UK – valid passport and NI Number
