What is the Role?
We require a Design Manager of the Civils and Structures team in Birmingham supporting the Contract Manager and Project Managers in delivery of all technical aspects of Rail related projects.
You will be required to carry out the following;
· Establish internal design standards and/or processes to achieve a continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.
· Delivery of designs in accordance with the Client’s requirements and appropriate design standards using cost effective methods of analysis and design
· Assess design resource requirements for medium and long term workloads and ensuring design resources are allocated and utilised to maximum effect.
Who are the likely candidates?
· Essential Qualifications: MEng, BEng or equivalent CEng MICE or MIStructE Desired Qualifications or equivalent
· PTS or other track safety qualifications
· Post-graduate relevant experience in the design of structures plus a broad experience of civil engineering practice
· Previous experience in the rail industry and knowledge of railways standards is essential in particular the field of civil and structural engineering.
· Experience in the management of engineering design teams
· Enthusiastic, committed with a ‘can do’ mentality
· The candidate should be computer literate and thoroughly conversant with MS Office suite and knowledge of the use of structural analysis software (Super STRESS, ASAS and Archie) and Project Management software (P3, Suretrack or MS Project)
· The jobholder should also be familiar with production of drawings using AutoCAD or Microstation
Responsibilities include…
· To take full responsibility for the technical quality of all civils & structures projects carried out by or on behalf of the design team
· Line management of all technical staff
· Management of teams of engineers and external suppliers
· To supervise and check the work of others and to take part in the professional development of those staff
· Manage the competency appraisal processes for the civils and structures team in Birmingham and liaise with the head of engineering
· Training and development, mentoring and motivation of team members
· Provide input into quality plan and implement quality practice on all projects
· Create and maintain clear lines of communication and conduct regular staff briefings
· Act as contractor’s responsible engineer and contractor’s engineering manager when required to do so
· Manage the following technical work: conceptual and outline design of engineering solutions, presentation of engineering options
· Preparation, checking and/or approval of feasibility studies, technical reports and other written documents
· Production and approval of design concepts, drawings, specifications and other technical documents
· Delivery of work to programme, budget and specification, reviewing project performance as required and where necessary recommending new practices to improve efficiency
· Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and monthly reviews
· Set performance targets for design production and monitor the output of individuals
· Assist the business development team and contract manager and bid managers with expert input on specialist technical matters for bid submissions and expressions of interest
· Planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources and finances
· Undertake any other reasonable task as requested.
