Job Summary

Atkins Rail civil engineering leads the industry in design development and management of total rail infrastructure systems.

Atkins Rail undertakes civil engineering consultancy and design on Network Rail, London Underground and light rail networks. We undertake projects from feasibility through to detailed design and construction management.

Our engineers are skilled in the design of permanent way (trackform and alignment), bridges and tunnels, passenger stations, freight terminals, maintenance and support facilities, and embankments and cuttings.

Current major rail projects include upgrade and improvement works on Thameslink, Docklands Light Railway and Kings Cross Station as well as work on the East London Line extension and W10 Route Clearance work in the South East.



Responsibilities

Undertake Design Team Leader role responsible for a team of engineers undertaking (but not limited to) the following activities:

  • Assessment, strengthening and design of existing metal/r.c. highway/pedestrian/railway supporting bridges
  • Assessment/reconstruction design of bridge decks and substructures


Required Skills
  • Interested in developing innovative yet practical designs that aid speedy construction (encompassing good maintenance/strengthening and reconstruction designs).
  • Good communication skills and able to work as part of a team to achieve agreed deadlines.
  • Able to communicate well and concisely in writing, in particular, previous experience in producing Feasibility/Outline & Detailed Design Reports is beneficial.
  • Demonstrate good working and technical knowledge of bridge assessment & design and use of Network Rail/Dtp/LUL Standards.
  • Knowledge of design, H&S Legislation and willing to work unsociable hours (ie.week nights and/or weekends)
  • Able to lead proposals and offers for projects with defined design cost parameters
  • Effectively manage own time which may if necessary be allocated to more than one project.
  • Ability to work within budget, to control costs and manage change control to ensure that additional work is paid for.
  • You will be commercially aware and have a flexible attitude to both the type of work undertaken and the level of responsibility accepted.
  • Allocate work to project team - monitor and ensure tasks are completed on time and to budget.
  • Guide the work of project team and be responsible for quality of their work.
  • Liaise with other disciplines and clients as required on technical & commercial aspects.
  • Strong Customer focus
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to work under pressure.


Required Qualifications
  • Ideally you will be a Chartered Engineer (or working towards) with First and/or Second Class Honours degree, or equivalent, in Civil /Structural Engineering
  • Experience of railway bridge and highway design including feasibility, outline & detailed design
