What is the Role?

The position is for a Principal Structures Engineer to lead an engineering team in Birmingham in the design of buildings, footbridges and other structures within a rail environment. You will be supporting the Contract Manager and Project Managers in delivery of all technical aspects of rail projects.

Delivery of designs in accordance with the clients requirements and appropriate design standards using cost effective methods of analysis and design. Assist in the development of innovative ways of providing design services and supervising the work of other less experienced staff.

Responsibilities include:

· Supervision of staff and assist in professional development
· Responsible for technical quality of structure projects
· Preparation and checking of feasibility studies
· Liase with Head of Engineering
· Delivery of work to programme, budget and specification
· Checking design calculations and structural analysis
· Produce designs and drawings
· Manager teams of engineers and contractors
· Business development

Who are the likely candidates?

Ideally you will have post-graduate relevant experience in the design of bridges plus a experience of civil engineering practice

Experience in the rail industry and knowledge of railways standards is essential in particular the design and construction of repairs, refurbishment or replacement of bridges in an operational railway environment

The candidate should be computer literate and thoroughly conversant with MS Office suite and experienced in the use of structural analysis software (Super STRESS, ASAS and Archie) and Project Management software (P3, Suretrack or MS Project)

You should also be familiar with production of drawings using AutoCAD or Microstation

What Skills do I need?

· Competent to work unsupervised and to supervise others
· Competent to check and approve the work of others
· Competent to sign off design certificates on behalf of the company
· PTS or other track safety qualifications (desirable)
