Metronet Rail is at the heart of a 30 year project to regenerate and transform London's Tube network - the oldest in the world. Under the Public Private Partnership, we're responsible for maintaining, renewing and upgrading 9 of London Underground's 12 Tube lines. Every day, we're investing over £3 million to revitalise a network that keeps one of the world's most dynamic cities on the move.
It's a massive undertaking. In fact, it is regarded as one of the most challenging and prestigious engineering projects anywhere in the world. Our task includes both the 'deep Tube' lines that stretch far below London's streets, and sub-surface lines that are much closer to street level.
A unique organisation...
The scale of the challenge called for a unique organisation, hence the creation of Metronet Rail in 2003. We're a consortium of five world class companies - Atkins, Balfour Beatty, Bombardier Transportation, EDF Energy and Thames Water. Each is a leader in its field. Bringing them together offers an unparalleled breadth and depth of expertise. Metronet is a team of talents currently numbering over 5,000 and rising... working together to deliver a transport system for the 21st century.
...for an extraordinary project
The scope of the regeneration programme is breathtaking. The 9 lines we're responsible for include over 470 miles of track, 1,263 points and crossings, 155 stations, 77.5 miles of 'deep Tube' tunnels, 806 bridges, 103 miles of embankments and cuttings, and a vast array of signalling and other assets vital to the network.

This is non-negotiable. Thanks to a concerted effort by the whole business, we obtained ISO 9001:2000 Certification for our Quality Management System six months ahead of schedule. From a 'DuPont' approach to safety leadership, to risk assessment, health management, safety training and the use of technology to reduce risk, we promise our staff and our stakeholders there will be no compromise on safety.
